Day 2: Bungoma County, Kenya.

In every meeting, there is the moment. The look, the word, the pause that disrupts my world and strips my soul of itself.

We stood in the classroom made of mud and sticks. Wycliff looked at me and held out a single crayon. “You fly here from the heavens to provide food and medicine and clothing. It is life-saving and we are thankful. But you also give our children this – adventure and fascination. The world has shape now because of you. It has color. It has form. The children – they only travel where their feet take them. But because of you, they now imagine the world as their home.”

I wondered what it might be like if we imagined more. Perhaps our worlds would find shape and color and form – and home.

I wanted to give the world a single crayon.
