There is a ritual that takes place every night of every mission trip. While to those who receive an email it looks like a mere update, to me it’s a diary of little treasures. I get to look back on all God did throughout the day and for just a few moments jump back in.

I realized on this latest journey that only those who are on the email list actually get to read the diaries. So I thought I might share them on the blog this time.. Perhaps they will give you a peek into what happens in the day-to-day of short term missions. Or perhaps they will fuel the flame of service inside your heart.

GuateTeam 2012. Xela, Guatemala. 6 February. Pequeno Refugio.

I think about how a lot of folks feel about Mondays – and think perhaps even a person most soured about the day might change their mind if they spent a day with the beautiful kids at Pequeno Refugio.

We awoke to the sun breaking through the clouds, and journeyed past the crowded streets of Xela to the quiet little cinder block buildings that are nestled near towering cliffs and a quiet river.

Lourdes and Teresa greeted us with hugs, and we were were given a peek into possibilities as the women shared their dreams about the children’s home and school.  “That land will have a gazebo so the children can enjoy meals outdoors, and this room will one day have computers for their education.” Every wish, every hope became a prayer.

We split into teams and worked on projects in the morning, and then spent the afternoon laughing and playing with the kids. The boys were taught how to make paper airplanes, and the girls transformed coffee filters into beautiful roses and butterflies. The time was unhurried and tender – with plenty of conversation and hugs. And as we left, the magical words, “Hasta manana!” filled the rooms…what a blessing to get to return to spend more time with our little friends!
