Rubber ducks joined us for breakfast this morning. They spoke a language we didn’t understand, but that was OK. They still received a warm welcome and a bite of waffle. That’s how meals are in my grandson Sawyer’s world. There is great excitement, special guests, giggles and messiness and sharing.
In fact, right now, every day is filled with a lot of “wow” and “again!” and “more” and belly laughs. Sawyer’s not yet discovered words like “bored” and “mundane.” He hasn’t determined that the here-and-now isn’t half as much fun as what could be just around the bend. He can watch the same episode of “Go Diego Go” over and over again and find fresh joy in the story. He loves to share toys and treats with friends – and puppies. He’s not worried about a better life because he’s too busy finding the treasures in the days. Sure, there are tears but they dry up quickly as new wonders unfold with every moment. Sawyer’s life is messy, but he doesn’t care. He knows there is someone around to make it all better and make it all beautiful.
He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s living the life I long to live every day. A life that finds the sacred in the common. A life that sees miracles in the ordinary. A life that loves to share life with others. And life that sees every day as a holiday – a holy day. A life I read about in Acts 2.
And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person’s need was met. They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw.
That life is made up of days. Days like today, with rubber ducks and Diego.
Today, I’ll let Sawyer be the teacher. I’ll see life through sparkling dreamy baby blue. Today, I’ll find the wonder of the “wow” and be unafraid to share and be willing to warmly welcome guests, even if they don’t speak a language I understand. Today, I’ll find joy in spending time extravagantly. Today, I’ll embrace messy, knowing God Himself is there to make it all better and make it all beautiful.
