Day 38: CasaRock #kitchentherapy

I looked around at the countertops filled with preparations for a party – the menu was scribbled on a piece of paper next to a jar of olives, cheese with freshly baked crostini, and carrots that would be roasted with orange and thyme. It was all to say “thank you” to a community of people who have walked a lot of cracked and blooming earth with me, and I wanted the time around the table to be precious for them.

The centerpiece was a cake – layers of champagne-infused pastry and buttercream. I held the sparkling sugar high to sprinkle it delicately over the top – and lost my breath when a rush of green poured out. “Can you make something of this?” I asked our houseguest – an adopted son of sorts with a perpetual smile and a heart willing to help. He set to work, carefully coaxing the mishap into motion and movement like fingerpaint.

“Oh my, it’s beautiful now.” I said. “It’s truly beautiful now.”

He smiled. “Happy accident.” And so it was – a most fortunate misfortune, an opportunity for what was wrong to be made even an even better right.

Perhaps this world needs more opportunities to fingerpaint mishaps into beauty. Maybe we all need more happy accidents.
