It’s a prayer of exactly seven syllables, the number that corresponds perfectly to the rhythm of our breathing. As you inhale—Abba. As you exhale—I belong to You.
(inhale) Abba.
(exhale) I belong to You.
(inhale) Abba.
(exhale) I belong to you.
Prayerfully consider taking a few moments every day for the next month, closing your eyes, upturning your palms, and praying, ‘Abba, I belong to You.’ Don’t make it anything more than that; trust me, it’s enough. ~Brennan Manning, The Furious Longing of God
It’s Sunday, and I’m savoring the prayers of others today – and sharing my favorites with you each week. This is my prayer for today in a land that’s so far from the familiar. I need the simplicity of presence today. Maybe you do too. I encourage you to whisper them, shout them, share them. Know that I’m praying for you today, and if you need anything, send a note my way!
Last year, I shared the stories about pictures I’ve taken. This year during the month of October, I’m opening up my journal and sharing prayers. They’re not eloquent or poetic – they’re simple honest talks with God. Some prayers are joyful and some are screams. Some are said in the morning and some at night. It’s my hope the words might help someone else find the words.
